EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH & SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS

As part of Raven Theatre's commitment to providing a strong cultural anchor in our community, we have established a viable ongoing theatre arts education program, which we offer to several area public elementary schools (Peirce, Stone, Hayt & Armstrong), by teaching theatre arts both in the classroom and at the Raven Theatre Complex.

Enriching the lives of economically disadvantaged children in our community is the number one goal of Raven Theatre’s Educational Outreach program.   It provides students with an opportunity to learn the basic principles and disciplines of theatre, and to use theatre tools as a means of improving life skills.  And we provide financially disadvantaged Chicago Public School students with the excitement of what is often their first exposure to the theatre and the first step toward a life-long interest in theatre arts.

If you would like to find out more about our Educational Outreach Program and how we might be able to work with your school in the future please contact Kelli Strickland at 773.571.3038 or write to us at info@raventheatre.com

CHILDREN'S SHOWS
Presented at Raven Theatre’s facility at 6157 N. Clark in Chicago

“... a fast-moving telling of these timeless stories...”

—Chicago Sun Times

“The interaction between cast and students was excellent.
The show was very age appropriate.”

—Sherry Bishop, Howe School

Throughout the year Raven Theatre presents two popular children’s shows – AESOP’S FABLES and THE DUCK, THE BIRD AND THE PEA!,  at Raven Theatre.  Both productions are 45 minutes in length and are ideal for children ages 3-9.  With these critically acclaimed shows, Raven Theatre introduces young audiences to the exhilaration of live theatre.  Our professional actors interact with the audience, encouraging children to respond vocally to the many predicaments that the various characters find themselves in.  Through such interaction children learn many of life’s enduring lessons such as:

  • Respect for differences and appreciation for the quality of others
  • Good sportsmanship
  • Strong social skills

AESOP’S FABLES brings to life six classic ancient fables – THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE, THE GRASSHOPPER AND THE ANT, THE LION AND THE MOUSE, PATTY THE MILKMAID, THE GOOSE THAT LAID THE GOLDEN EGGS, and THE BOY WHO CRIED WOLF Raven’s adaptation, laced with humor and  music throughout, takes a modern twist on these favorite tales.

Three classic fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen—The Ugly Duckling, The Nightingale and The Princess and the Pea—are adapted to the stage with music, dance, poetry and humor. These stories take children on a fantasy journey through nature’s woodlands (The Ugly Duckling), to the emperor’s estate in far off China (The Nightingale) and to Peapod Palace, home of the royal family of Pealand (The Princess and the Pea)!
The critics rave:

“Aesop’s Fables... may be the friendliest production in town, and is certainly a fine way to
introduce younger children to theater.”
—Lerner Skyline“Delightfully delivered... Raven Theatre’s Aesop’s Fables inventively updates Aesop’s tales of caution without moralizing or condescending... the kids are captivated.”—Chicago Tribune“The Duck, The Bird, and The Pea! is a very original and fun show…”—Chicago Sun-Times

Book your school or child’s organization for a performance of either show at Raven throughout the year. For more information and booking reservations call Kelli Strickland, Educational Outreach Director at (773) 571-3038.
